Another weekend has come and gone. Most of my Saturday was spent running around doing errands and laundry and other such fun things. Off and on this weekend I have been trying to learn two new things to me....toe up socks and knitting socks on two circulars. It's not going well. I am determined to figure them both out. Well today I am anyway.
I have been making some other knitting progress though. Here are my Trekking vanilla socks so far. See the colored yarn where the afterthought heel is going to go? I am following the directions in Folk Socks for the heel, which says to knit 4 inches past the waste yarn for a lady's sock. It doesn't say what size lady's socks though, so I'll probably pull out the waste yarn and pick up the stitches with another yarn when I get to 4 inches so I can try it on.

I also started a new pair of socks this weekend. This is the Child's French sock from Knitting Vintage Socks. I made this pattern last year for my Bloomin Feet buddy Leah. They were so pretty it was not easy for me to put them in the mail, so now I am making myself a pair. I am using Lorna's Laces in Denim.

I also have been plugging away on the sleeves for Ariann. They're getting there slowly but surely. I think my gauge is off a little bit with the double points because they seem a little snug. I am being a dope and presuming they'll be ok after blocking. Did it make you cringe reading that? It made me cringe writing it.

Happy Knitting and enjoy the Super Bowl tonight if you're watching it. I know I will be!
Posted by Karen at February 4, 2007 05:04 PMThe French Socks are just lovely! I love mine in red, and the Denim is rockin' too!!
Good luck on the two circs. It's one of my favorite ways to knit socks!
Posted by: Leah at February 4, 2007 05:41 PMI prefer one circular if I'm not using dpns, though I occasionaly use two circulars. Good luck! You don't have to knit 4" after knitting the waste yarn on an afterthought, just as long as you're comfortably past that row. If you have really short feet, it might be an idea to stop a little earlier. Once you've knitted your heel you'll get a better idea of fit as well. I usually can't wait for 4" and only do one or two!
Posted by: dawn at February 4, 2007 06:21 PMThat denim is a great color for socks. You know I'm curious about how your toe-up sock adventure goes. I did decide to just go with a basic ribbed sock after all that reknitting the toe-up jaywalker.
As for your Ariann sleeves... from what I've read, the lace will open up quite a bit when it's blocked, so hopefully your gauge isn't as tight as it feels. I guess I'm an optimist! :) Once I learned to knit with two circular needles, it's rare for me to knit with dpns. It feels like wrestling with a porcupine at the beginning! :)
Posted by: Karma at February 5, 2007 12:56 AMYour Trekking socks look great! When I was trying to picture afterthought heels in my mind I thought that basically you are knitting the ribbing, leg, foot (between the heel gusset decreases and the toes) and then the toes before doing the heel. If my thinking was right you could measure( end of gusset decreases to start of toe decreases) a pair of well fitting socks and see if that measurement is near what you expect it to be.
I'll be interested to hear how knitting socks on two circulars goes for you. I tried once and really would love to learn but the first attempt was such an utter failure I haven't tried again.
Good luck with the 2 circs for socks. Your socks are beautiful as usual and I am sure those sleeves will block out fine! Have a good week.
Posted by: wendy g at February 5, 2007 08:51 AM4 inches past the waste yarn sounds kind of small to me, unless the toe is especially long. When I do an afterthought heel (no gusset) I actually make the sock a little longer than usual to make up for the extra stretching the fabric has to do over the instep.
Posted by: Joni at February 5, 2007 08:55 AMWell, if those afterthought heel socks come out too small, just remember your good friend Jenny has size 5 feet! hehehehehe. And, yes, I cringed when I read about Ariann. Good luck!
Posted by: Jenny at February 5, 2007 10:07 AMMy, that's a lot of socks!
Posted by: katie at February 5, 2007 11:14 AMHey Karen... You guessed correctly! I'm knitting the Everyday Cardigan. Email your address and I'll send along some yarn.
Posted by: Suzanne at February 5, 2007 12:14 PMI have always had problems with that afterthought heel - but good for you for stretching yourself a bit and trying new things! Lots of great socks on the needles right now.
Posted by: Anne at February 5, 2007 12:59 PMAre you liking the Lorna's Laces for your socks? I enjoyed the yarn though the pattern I tried failed me.
I've been wondering if toe-up socks would be easier, or socks on the circulars, rather than the traditional sock patterns I've tried. I'll be watching your future posts to see what you think!
Posted by: Debby at February 5, 2007 03:27 PMI tried an afterthought heel once. I am sure it will go better for you!
Posted by: Emily at February 5, 2007 04:29 PMLorna's Laces socks are gorgeous. I haven't tried that pattern yet - it's lovely looking.
and the sleeves.... yeah, it would definitely make me nervous as well if the gauge was very far off from the body gauge....... errr, ummm, might want to try them on (?) smile.
I've been wanting to try the afterthought heel so I'll be interested to see how it works out for you. Do let us know!
Posted by: Jessica at February 6, 2007 11:09 AMYou are the sock queen! (grin)
Posted by: Becky at February 6, 2007 02:15 PMHey, I thought all you did was spin? It looks like you've been getting in a lot of knitting time, too! I really like the Child's French Socks. It's a lovely pattern (that I'd like to eventually get around to knitting), and the LL sock yarn will showcase those pattern stitches perfectly.
Posted by: Rachel at February 6, 2007 03:35 PMi like using 2 circular needles instead of the double points for a more even gauge. try it sometime. can't wait to see your sweater finished -- it's a great pattern! go bonne marie
Posted by: jdaly at February 7, 2007 12:15 PMLornas Laces is great and that Denim looks so nice. I was going to start Flyingdales for my next sweater but have been leaning towards Ariann instead.
