I took a picture of where I was with my first toe up sock on two circulars before I ripped it out. I bet you've never seen circulars that looked like this before! I didn't last very long with the circulars before I switched back to dp's. I don't do well with change sometimes. I loved the Magic Cast-on but it seems a little too wide for my foot, so I will start with fewer stitches and increases the next time around. I haven't figured out yet what to do for a heel with this pair. It makes my head hurt thinking about doing a heel backwards. I'll worry about that when I get there I guess.

I hope your weekend was grand! Happy Knitting!

The socks are great! Love the color. Also, my son (away at college), hubby and I truly enjoyed the "amazing dancing dog". Wow! Have a great week!

The Madder Ribs are beautiful. They look like they fit you really well, too. I had the same problem with the Magic Cast-On: not knowing how many stitches to start out with. That was another reason that my sock was re-knit a kajillion times! I'm getting close to the heel and I think I'll do a short row heel this time, but there's a sock (Widdershins) at Knitty that teaches you how to do a "backwards" heel flap.

I love that colorway on those socks! Beautiful job. Good luck with the toe up socks. I really like making mine that way but I haven't used the magic cast-on before. May have to give it a try soon.

Love 'em! Toe-ups are weird--esp. the heel. I've not yet been able to do them without following step by step instructions.

the socks look great! i've knit that pattern twice now and think i have it in me to knit it again :o) sorry about the toe up not working out for you :o)

Hey, I'm working on some Madder Ribs socks myself! In Sock Hop yarn, though.

Sorry the toe up didn't work out. The colorway looks lovely though. I'm partial the the Turkish cast-on for toe up myself!

Yay for pretty socks! I really like the colors of the toe-up one in progress.

Love the madder ribs on your feet Karen. I have the same problem with toe up cast ons and try as i might i always wind up sticking the socks back on the dpns. Ive given up. I must just be a dpn person. : )

I love that pattern and it looks great in the yarn you picked!! How fun. :)

The shading of the yarn on those socks is beautiful. It reminds me of an "enchanted forest"!

Great socks, and I have some of that yarn in stash, must dig it out, now that I can see how nice it is. You could do a short row heel if you don't fancy a standard heel.

The socks are great!! I really love knitting on dpns. It seems so mysterious and difficult but it's easy.

Wonderful socks - they look so warm! I am making this pattern myself - seems to be pretty darn popular! :)

I love the madder rib socks! There's something about the rib pattern that just moves me.

It's funny about the socks on circular(s) thing. I'm completely proficient in every sock technique I know of, but whenever I start socks on circulars I still end up moving them back to dpn's. I know there are others that say otherwise, but I think dpn's are way faster.

I love that Madder Rib pattern in that yarn -- they look great.

Love that madder rib pattern - and that yarn as well. I don't really enjoy the toe ups either, but there are a couple of patterns I'm thinking of doing that call for it .
I think I'll just let you continue to go first, and see what happens (grin)

What is the yarn you're using for the toe-ups? It is so pretty! I think it's time for you to make friends with the short rows. They're really not that bad once you get to know them!

Don't worry about not getting the size the first time around! After all, the first pair of top-down socks you made probably required some re-working too, right? The heel is done with a short-rowing method. My personal fav is the short row wrap heel. Kinda like the provisional cast on toe, but, since you already have the live stitches, you just work on the ones for the heel. It's actually, very easy! This from a not-very-experienced knitter, so....

I love the Madder Rib socks. They look really nice in the Mega Boots yarn. How did you like knitting with it? I've had some in my stash for a while now, but haven't gotten around to it.

these are some great looking socks! sorry the circulars didn't work out.

I was just looking at that yarn this past weekend...it has a lovely, subtle color change... good choice for this patten, Karen. Very nice.

Those socks are gorgeous - they look like socks you could happily live in. :)

Awww, these socks are totally yummy, what a great and calm colourway with these subtle changes in colour! And I'm so like you when it comes to knitting with circulars, I tried it a couple of times but just couldn't get the hang of it and switched back to dpn's immediately - sometimes change isn't the best of things ;)

Love the socks! I started a pair of plain stockinette socks using MegaBoots, but after seeing your Madders, I'm thinking I would like the socks better with a bit of ribbing. Thank goodness I'll only have to rip one cuff!

Posted by: Cyndi at February 14, 2007 10:14 AM

oooohhhh pretty! I have a ball of the same yarn and haven't been able to decide what to make with it - madder rib = great idea! I might steal it ;o)
